P.O.P. (Power of Pussy) Web Series: Part One
So this is a wellshot and very interesting multi-part web series doc about black strippers. Yet the first thing I wish is that black women were the creators, preferably the black women strippers being profiled. Why? Because that pos black woman hating monologue at the beginning makes me wanna bash Mr. Artemus Jenkins, the director, with a rock. You just CAN’T trust men when teh subject is women and sex eh?
So far, I am looking at the fact that the two women that have been sharing their stories are very brown, though there was footage of a dark skinned black girl as b roll, and then there was a group shot including more dark skinned black girls. Here is the description:
But according to the creator of the web series, Artemus Jenkins, the goal of his series is to feature ” “women who dance and have danced at the historic Magic City strip club in Atlanta. My primary goal in doing it was to put a more human side to a group that many people often misconceive as a low life group of women. It may or may not change people’s views, but I, at least, wanted to delve into their world a bit so that we all could have a better understanding of the culture.”More from Shadow and ActI don’t know enough about the lifestyle to make commentary on that, so I am going to stick with the film part of it. Like I said before, well shot and edited. Loved the framing of the sets, in fact I kept getting distracted on first watch because I was like YES. Great shot! Nice color-correction. I didn’t feel like the camera was too intrusive on the girls. I’m looking forward to seeing more. Hopefully the whole thing goes in depth and does not end up being exploitative. And if Mr. Jenkins would STOP making deletrious comments about the women who are allowing him access to their lives and stories, that would be great. I am really looking forward to good discussion on this.
